I am 100 percent convinced.

Numbers participation are the key to growing the sport and having many JV events. Right now look around the area, most schools struggle to get 20 wrestlers in there room. That is the death of this sport. You have to build it from the ground up. JV wrestlers will become fans as well and there parents and they will come to see them wrestle. Here me out.

I think LaSalle has it where kids must participate in 1 activity, that is new this year. We had over 40 kids start out and participate in wrestling this year. We had 35 get through the year because I just sent the banquet info out in the mail. Pretty damn good. Its an increase from the year before. My wife advertised it in the school news about wrestling and that it would fulfill there activity obligation .. If they made it a two activities requirement I would imagine we would have 50-60 kids participating.

Have lots of JV matches before the varsity matches, more people show up. Thats 40 JV kids in the stand , they bring there friend or girl friend and a parent and it really starts to add up and they start learning the sport... It snowballs, not just for sports but for the arts and theater as well.

Title 9 and fighting it is a losing battle, a real loser. We should be focused on required after school participation to win the battle and grow the sport. I believe 2 activities required would do it.

Show me a wrestling room with 60-80 kids High school wrestlers in the room and I will show you a damn healthy wrestling program with fannies in the stands

    Author: gferrell
Subject: D12 PUBLIC
Posted: Mar 10 2010 at 11:14am

Well, the first step to improve PPL wrestling is to start neighborhood youth programs to get these kids interested at a young age. PAL has helped a lot of parochial and public school city kids but there needs to be more of these programs because the best PAL kids have seemingly benefited Frankford and Northeast Catholic but not so much the other programs. Some of the city parochial schools like Roman Catholic have now started their own feeder programs so that they can improve, I spoke with Coach Lane and that is progressing and he seems happy with the results. That's why the "Beat The Streets" program which was successful in New York can and should be implemented here, I'm not sure at all what progress has been currently made to that end.

Off season wrestling for the kids at the HS level who are wrestling now would also be helpful. More matches during the season too, I couldn't believe some of the PPL wrestlers who qualified for regions have only 12-13 matches all year. They'll never get better wrestling that few matches and only a few of them even bother to venture into the suburbs for stiffer competition. It seems that Overbrook didn't even field a team this year.

One other thing that hurts is that basketball is probably even more dominant in the city than it is in the suburbs. But before we start to worry too much about the city, I'd say let's also try and help some of the AAA D1 programs like Penn Wood. That's basically a city school in the suburbs. They have a state champion basketball team, and a similar population demographic. They have the same academic and discipline issues too. If we can get that program back on it's feet (Dan Madonna is a good guy and solid coach and his efforts are probably the only thing keeping that program alive) then we'll have a better idea how to help the city. Our AA is barely in better shape than the city schools. I live in Lower Bucks. Every school around here has been producing state qualifiers and more. Why isn't, say, Bristol Boro's team getting similar results at AA? New Hope hasn't done much better and here in Morrisville the school is so small that they dropped their program several years ago. It's great to see Dan Park working hard to bring Lower Moreland out of the morass of indifference that has plagued that program for so long, and he can do it. They beat some AAA SOL schools this year, and if you look at the archives this was once a AAA program that sent kids to states.

Greg
The greater the number of athletes in a particular classification might result in a greater number of good athletes/wrestlers, but not always. Blanket statements claiming superiority from either side AA or AAA is just a lot of nothing. Depth of talent can be greater with greater numbers but that can change year to year. I have watched both AA and AAA wrestling in Hershey and the BEST PIAA State Tournament would include ALL schools in PA regardless of AA or AAA.
